Support TAA’s Advocacy for Textbook and Academic Authors in the Bartz v. Anthropic Settlement

While critical in supporting textbook and academic authors whose works are included in the Settlement, TAA’s advocacy efforts have been costly— and we could use your help to defray those costs.

We are the only association actively advocating for your interests in the Settlement. Our direct involvement has resulted in:

  • University press authors receiving a 50-50 default split with their publisher.
  • Providing invaluable guidance on filing claims, especially for educational authors who have no default split.
  • Preventing publishers from directing authors on what percentage split they should claim for their works, and forcing Sage, who sent such an email, to send a correction to its authors.
  • Working to ensure that authors receive clear instructions on how to settle disagreements with their publisher on percentage splits post-claims process, including that they have the right to have their claim reviewed by the Special Master if a satisfactory agreement cannot be made with their publisher.

Michael Sullivan

"I have been involved with TAA for about 35 years and have watched the organization evolve from a membership of 30 to over 4,000. The importance of TAA to the textbook and academic publishing community is notable. But as a nonprofit, TAA must rely on its membership for support beyond dues if it is to continue its role as the only organization dedicated to textbook and academic authors. I hope my gift to TAA will inspire others to help TAA continue its work on behalf of authors."
