Most scholars and academics have some creative outlet from the heavy intellectual lifting they do during the day. Maybe it’s yoga, or playing music, or scrapbooking. Or it might be writing fiction. Storytelling (of the fictional kind) is an itch many academic
authors have thought about or tried.
Publishing Consultant John Bond, after writing seven books on academic writing and publishing, decided to try fiction. He wrote a speculative fiction thriller called To the End of Reckoning (published August 2026). It is traditionally published by Histria Publishing and distributed by Simon & Schuster. He had no agent.
John will present an informational session on:
- Writing fiction, in different forms and genres.
- Do you need to write the whole work first or not?
- Do you need an editor or first readers before seeking a publisher/agent?
- Should you try self-publishing or hybrid publishing, or insist on a traditional publisher?
- How to find an actual interested publisher.
- Do you need an agent and how do you find one?
- What do you need to prepare for an agent or publisher for them to consider (finished manuscript, book proposal, query letter)?
- Essential: The author’s responsibility with promotion, publicity, and marketing.
Put on your creative hat. Post a photo of Margaret Atwood or Dan Brown in your office. Then, bring your questions, insecurities, and enthusiasm to this practical session that should inspire all TAA members and friends to get out their quill pen and dream.
