Q: "I'm
a new member and read the informative messages about going from
work for hire to contract work. As a beginner, I'd like advice
on how to get work for hire assignments first. I've been an adjunct
in English/Composition since 2000."
A: Don
Collins, Former Managing Editor:
"We maintained
a file of available people. Send a vita to publishing firms clearly
indicating your expetise. Some people contacted us at conferences.
If you attend a conference at which publishers exhibit, drop
by and see if you can talk to an editor. Personal contact helps. Sometimes
authors recommended people to us. Do you know an author in your
field? If so use that contact. Beyond that there are quite a
number of Publisher Service Companies. All maintain a stock of
freelancers. You can contact them."
