What can I expect
from a mentoring relationship?
A mentor may provide
advice, suggestions, or direction on a variety of career or authoring
issues; feedback on an article, book proposal, manuscript, or other
type of writing; answer questions and provide guidance; etc.
Expectations on
behalf of both parties should be agreed on prior to beginning a mentoring
relationship. Some of those expectations might include:
- Type of mentoring that will be provided
- What each of you expect from the relationship
- How much time will be required
- Who should contact whom, when, how, and how often
- How quickly will questions be answered
- How mentoring will take place (e.g., phone, email, mail, meeting
at annual conference, etc.)
You are free to
determine your own partnership and how you want to manage the relationship.
