French media firm
Lagardere has placed a bid for Vivendi Universal's publishing assets,
which include Houghton Mifflin. The amount of the bid was not disclosed.

Barnes
& Noble University expands course options
Barnes & Noble.com's
Barnes & Noble University will begin offering enhanced online courses
the week of October 7. The "Premier" courses will offer enhanced content,
smaller class size, course completion certificates and Continuing Education
Units through the American Council on Education. The courses can be
purchased individually or by subscription. Some of the courses to be
offered include: Photoshop 6.0, Fundamentals of Project Management ,
and Start Writing by Gotham Writer's Workshop®. For more information

CEO David Smith said he is still searching for a "transforming" purchase.
A takeover offer the company made for Blackwell, has not yet been answered.
Smith said he is also looking at Kluwer Academic Publishers and Bertelsmann
Springer, also up for sale.

Bertelsmann AG's
DirectGroup Chief Executive Ewald Walgenbach said expansion of the company's
mail order book business to other countries is not a priority for at
least another two or three years. He cites the pressure to cut costs
at the DirectGroup book club unit, which is losing money.

scandals don't deter students from entering accounting profession
Reuters news service
reports that enrollment in accounting courses at business schools nationwide
is up despite the thrashing accountants have taken in the wake of this
summer's corporate scandals. Emory University's Goizueta Business School
in Atlanta reports a 35 percent increase in enrollment for the School's
Certified Public Accountant-track senior courses. Western University's
Haworth College of Business in Kalamazoo reports a 13 percent increase
in the number of accounting majors.
