Harris loses
copyright suit
The U.S. District
Court in San Francisco, CA ruled that the San Jose Mercury News' use
of photographer Chris Harris's photo of Walker Percy in a book review
published by the newspaper constituted "fair use." The photo, individually
copyrighted by Harris, a TAA member and TAA president-elect, was used
in the book, "The Life You Save May be Your Own," by Paul Elie.

Pawlak to fill its newly created associate executive director position.
Pawlak has worked for TAA for more than 12 years, most recently as the

TAA conference to be held in Buffalo, NY
In an effort to
attract more new and academic members, TAA has decided to hold its 2007
Conference in Buffalo, NY. A large concentration of new TAA members
reside in the Buffalo area. An informal e-mail survey of TAA members
regarding whether to hold the 2007 Conference in Buffalo, NY or Chicago,
IL, found a slightly larger number preferred Buffalo. The exact date
in June that the conference will be held has not yet been decided. The
2007 TAA Conference will include two tracks, one for textbook authors
and one for academic authors. It will also include a social networking
event and a tour of a local publishing house.

Book
rental same as used book?
A TAA member asks:
"Our college bookstore has instituted a textbook lending program, where
for a fee the students can borrow some of the most popular textbooks.
Is this any different than buying back used books and reselling them?"
