Step One to Becoming a More Prolific Author

Much is known about the steps scholars can take to become more prolific, said Tara Gray, who will present her popular writing workshop, Publish and Flourish: Become More Prolific, as a 10-hour pre-conference workshop at the TAA convention in Las Vegas in June. She will be sharing a step in each News Alert leading up to the convention. Here's step one: Become a manager of your time, not a victim of it. To become a prolific scholar, you must take control of your time. You must stop seeing "being busy" as only a status symbol. "Being busy" is a status symbol, to be sure, but it's also a way of staying victimized. Look closely at your colleagues who are staggering around under the loads of teaching, research, and service, complaining constantly. Do they look empowered? Are they? We all have different amounts of power, money, prestige, intelligence and so on. But we all have the same amount of time -- you, me, and the President of the United States. To become a prolific scholar, you must become a manager of your time, not a victim of it.

TAA President Quoted In SacBee Article

TAA President Michael Sullivan was quoted in an August 28, 2004 article in the SacBee, the online version of the Sacramento Bee, "Faculty book resales raise ethical issue". The article talks about Sullivan's math textbook, "College Algebra", selling on a website that sells faculty review copies for between $36.75 and $44.75 -- more than $60 less than its $103 retail price. Sullivan was quoted in the article as saying: "I don't think we can really understand the enormity of this problem. And that this practice is also destroying the integrity of the educational marketplace." View the full text of the article at: http://www.sacbee.com/content/news/story/10540015p-11459035c.html
