Franklin H. Silverman
Publishing for Tenure and Beyond

This book is intended for both assistant professors and graduate students who are planning to pursue a career in college teaching, states the author, who has written more than a dozen books and more than 100 journal articles.

After referring to obtaining tenure as a game and publishing as a rule of the game, Silverman lists some rules for the Publishing for Tenure Game including:

  • A participant must have the courage to write.
  • The manuscript shows both an awareness and understanding of relevant contemporary literature and the literature review is sharply focused.
  • The findings reported are related to the existing body of knowledge.

Silverman advises writers to learn to accept rejection as "part of the game" Researchers should seek extra-mural funding and involve students in the research, he writes.

Beginning authors should be "low profile" with colleagues, especially about any income-producing work, but should be "high profile" with deans, department heads and vice presidents.

One important point stressed by Silverman is to produce projects that are peer-reviewed. At least one peer-reviewed publication each year in a respected journal is a good goal, he writes. Silverman discusses various publishing options, ranging from printed scholarly journals to letters to the editor. He comments that including non-academic publications in a tenure portfolio might be frowned upon. Various book-publishing options are discussed.

Chapter Six deals with "Creating an Article, Book or Material." The author discusses how an effective writing schedule can become addictive. He presents tips to make writing successful. One interesting bit of trivia is that 27 percent of college text authors used legal pads for writing a first draft.

Other chapters deal with copyright and fair use, ethical issues, funding research and publishing with a collaborator. One section discusses considerations when seeking a co-author.

Although the primary focus is on publishing for tenure, Silverman includes a chapter on publishing after tenure. It has a section on post-tenure review, and options for post-tenure publishing are discussed.

The final chapter, "They Rejected It! Now What?" was "frankly an afterthought," writes Silverman. He presents erroneous assumptions about submitting manuscripts and then refutes them. The book closes on an up note: "as soon as you can after having a manuscript or proposal rejected, make whatever changes you think are necessary and submit it to another publisher."

This book achieves its stated purpose of providing guidance for assistant professors and graduate students in the publication for tenure game. However, it includes much useful material for those who have achieved tenure but plan to continue playing the publication game. I recommend it.

OTHER COMMENTS

"Silverman provides not only useful, but essential guidance to college faculty and other professionals interested in a respectable and increasingly popular alternative to commercial publishing houses. I recommend this book highly to any author who is interested in publishing his or her own material."

-- John F. Wakefield (education), University of North Alabama
"I wish this book had been available before I started self-publishing. It describes almost all the ins and outs of self-publishing that I have encountered--plus many more. With self-publishing becoming more popular and acceptable, it seems that any writer would benefit from the knowledge that is locked within the pages of Dr. Silverman's book."
-- Jerome A. Halvorson (communications disorders), University of Wisconsin-River Falls
"One wonders why this book, or at least one like it, wasn't written and published long ago. Using both his own and others experience, Dr. Silverman presents a practical, highly readable overview of the entire self-publishing process. The book is quite thorough and gives equal weight to the arguments for and against academic self-publishing. There are practical suggestions, cautions, and examples. Any academic author comtemplating self-publishing should purchase this book and study it carefully."
-- Robert D. Moulton associate vice president. for research and graduate dean, Lamar University
