Authors Asking

Q: "Should we form alliances with the Authors Guild or other organizations so as to better exert leverage on publisher?"

A: John Vivian, former TAA president: We have joined with other authors' groups from time to time to pursue the joint interests of our members. These occasions have included amicus briefs in court cases and resolutions on author issues. Recently TAA joined with the American Society of Journalists and Authors and the Authors Guild to create the Authors Registry. We at TAA also worked with nine other author groups to create the Authors Coalition to collect repatriated reprography revenue. No other author groups represents text and academic authors exclusively, and much of TAA's agenda is ours alone.

> Vivian, a mass communication author, has represented TAA at the Authors Coalition, the European Writers Congress and the formative discussions for a new federation of U.S. authors.
