Titling tips
by Tara Gray

Title your tables, graphs, sections of papers, and papers so that they show the point, rather than just naming the subject.

Instead of titling a diagram or table "A Model of Transport Costs," title it "All Conferences Should Happen in the Midwest" (McCloskey 2000:47). Avoid section titles such as "Introduction" or "Conclusion" in favor of "Economists ignore the sexual division of labor" or "Housework should be included in national income" (McCloskey 2000:23).

To title this way, you will need to include verbs in your titles. Or, as McCloskey (2000: 38) puts it, write with "declarative sentences advancing the argument."

Check out the outstanding book Economical Writing (2000) by Deirdre McCloskey.

Good luck with it: if you have any questions or comments about writing, please contact me at tgray@nmsu.edu. I'd love to hear from you and will answer your questions.
