Testing expert: Make questions text-dependent

The purpose for assessment is to measure what kids know and are able to do, said Rosalie Jordan, senior director of custom assessments at Harcourt, so test questions need to reflect on the author's knowledge and be important and relevant to what they teach. Test questions should be, said Jordan:

  • Appropriate in interest and difficulty to the age and grade of the students being tested.
  • Free of culture, ethnic, gender and economic bias and stereotypes.
  • Text dependent, if the test is requiring the student to have read the textbook.
  • Worth answering.
