TAA announces 2011 Texty, McGuffey Award winners Seven textbooks were awarded 2011 TAA Textbook Excellence Awards (Texty), which recognize excellence in current textbooks and learning materials. Six textbooks were awarded 2011 TAA McGuffey Longevity Awards (McGuffey), which recognize textbooks and learning materials whose excellence has been demonstrated over time. Five textbooks will receive a Texty in the College division, while two textbooks will receive a Texty in the Elementary/High School (El-Hi) division. The six McGuffey Award winners were all in the College division. David M. Allan M.A., M.D., graduated from Cambridge University, England and Guy’s Hospital Medical School, London, England. He has been a pediatric intern at Guy’s Hospital in London, England, a family physician in the National Health Service in Sheffield, England, chief pediatric resident at Bellevue Hospital at New York University Medical Center; an instructor in Pediatrics at New York University Medical Center, director of the pediatric training program at Mercy Hospital and Medical Center, San Diego; associate professor of Clinical Pediatrics at the University of California, San Diego; and associate dean for Continuing Education in the Health Sciences at the University of California, San Diego, School of Medicine. David has designed, scripted, directed, and produced more than 50 award-winning, virtual reality programs to teach decision-making and problem-solving skills for physicians and nurses. He has also designed, scripted, directed and produced 60 award-winning videotapes which were designed to be, and were, converted to virtual reality programs to teach technical, procedural, communication, and humanistic skills for allied health professionals. He is the lead author of Medical Language for Modern Health Care, 1st. ed., published by McGraw-Hill Career Education, where he uses virtual reality techniques for learning anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology. The second edition of Medical Language for Modern Health Care, was the recipient of the 2011 Text and Academic Authors Association’s Textbook Excellence Award. He is also lead author of Essentials of Medical Language, now in its second edition.
Howard Anton Howard Anton received his B.A. from Lehigh University, his M.A. from the University of Illinois, and his Ph.D. from the Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn (now part of NYU), all in mathematics. After working in the manned space program at Cape Canaveral in the early 1960's, he returned to graduate school to work on his Ph.D. In1968 he became a professor of mathematics at Drexel University, where he taught and did mathematical research for 15 years. In 1983 Dr. Anton left his tenured position at Drexel to focus on textbook writing and professional activities. Both his Linear Algebra and Calculus texts are now in their 10th editions, and there are more than 150 foreign versions of his books, including translations into Spanish, Arabic, Portuguese, Italian, Hebrew, Indonesian, Japanese, Chinese, French, and German. Prof. Anton is a past President of the Eastern Pennsylvania and Delaware section of the Mathematical Association America, served on the national Board of Governors of that organization, and guided the creation of its Student Chapters. He was among the first members of the TAA, and worked closely with Michael Keedy on various projects relating to its organization. Dr. Anton, now a Professor Emeritus of Drexel University, enjoys travel and photography, and remains active in various book projects. Dr. Betty Y. Ashbaker, distinguished author and teaching professional, has been training paraprofessional teacher teams for over 15 years throughout the US and in the UK. She is the co-author of numerous titles including A Teacher’s Guide to Working with Paraeducators (ASCD), Supporting and Supervising your Teaching Assistant, (published by Continuum, London), Paraprofessionals in the Classroom and Supporting Early Literacy: Assisting with Early Literacy: A manual for paraprofessionals. (Allyn & Bacon) and Planning Your Paraprofessionals’ Path: An Administrator's Legal Compliance and Training Guide (LRP). Dr. Ashbaker is an Associate Professor at Brigham Young University. Her research interests include the training, management, and supervision of paraprofessionals; special education legal issues; and secondary transition.
Dr. Talya Bauer (Ph.D., Purdue University) is the Gerry & Marilyn Cameron Professor of Management at Portland State University. She has coauthored three textbooks with Flat World Knowledge, including Organizational Behavior, Principles of Management, and Atlas Black: Managing to Succeed (a management graphic novel series). Dr. Bauer is an award-winning teacher of organizational behavior, management, power and influence, negotiations, human resource management, and training and development at the graduate and undergraduate level. She conducts research in the areas of leadership, selection, and new employees, which have resulted in dozens of journal publications, such as the Academy of Management Journal, Journal of Applied Psychology, Personnel Psychology, Journal of Management, and Academy of Management Learning & Education. She has acted as a consultant for government, Fortune 1000 and start-up organizations. Dr. Bauer is the editor of the Journal of Management and is on the editorial boards of the Journal of Applied Psychology and Industrial and Organizational Psychology: Perspectives on Science and Practices. She is a fellow of the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology and the Association for Psychological Science.
Sherry Bishop recently retired as an instructor at North Arkansas College, Harrison, Arkansas, where she taught web design and graphic design for 28 years. She graduated from the University of Arkansas with a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration and a master’s degree in Vocational Business Education. She is married to Donald Bishop and they have three children and four grandchildren. Sherry received three North Arkansas College Endowed Chairs in Technology, the Outstanding Faculty Award from North Arkansas College, the Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP) Teaching Excellence Award for Region 6 and two National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development (NISOD) Teaching Excellence Awards. Sherry has authored or co-authored twenty-seven textbooks on Dreamweaver for Cengage Learning. She also presents in webinars and at national conferences and workshops. Charles Boocock is a Toronto-based lawyer and writer. He holds a Masters in Journalism from the University of Western Ontario and a law degree from Georgetown University. He is the author of the graphic novel Stolen!
William Briggs was on the mathematics faculty at the University of Colorado, Denver for 23 years, teaching throughout the undergraduate and graduate curriculum with a special interest in applied mathematics. He developed the Quantitative Reasoning course for liberal arts students at CU-Denver and coauthored a textbook with Jeffrey Bennett to support the course. He is the author of five other textbooks and monographs. He is a former Vice-President for Education of SIAM, a University of Colorado President's Teaching Scholar, and the recipient of a Fulbright Fellowship to Ireland.
Randy Burt is a graduate of the University of Texas at Austin, holding a bachelor of arts degree in government. Following a host of post-graduate courses and a career of more than 25 years as a home office life insurance underwriter (writing instructional manuals and reviewing thousands of medical reports), he was uniquely qualified to contribute to cpTeach, Expert Coding Made Easy!, a text that combines lessons in anatomy and medical procedures with principles of medical coding. In his spare time, he is an avid student of American history, with a political items collection dating back to George Washington and John Adams.
JoAnne Schudt Caldwell is Professor Emeritus in the College of Education and Leadership at Cardinal Stritch University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She has authored several books on literacy assessment and is the co-author with Lauren Leslie of The Qualitative Reading Inventory 5 (2011) and Intervention Strategies to Follow Informal Reading Inventory Assessment: So What Do I Do Now? (2009). In 1997 she was named Wisconsin Teacher Educator of the Year and in 2005 was granted an Achievement Award from Marquette University. Her research interests include assessment, content area reading comprehension and miscue analysis.
Teresa Carleton is a teacher with more than three decades of experience with the Toronto District School Board, the most recent as Curriculum Leader of English at Humberside Collegiate Institute. She has also worked with OISE, University of Toronto, both as an instructor in the English Specialist AQ course and as a Teacher Candidate Practicum Supervisor. In addition to this, for the past several years, she has worked as an author and editor in educational publishing.
Lyle Cochran is a Professor of Mathematics at Whitworth University in Spokane, Washington. He has taught a wide variety of undergraduate mathematics courses at Washington State University, Fresno Pacific University, and, since 1995, at Whitworth University. His expertise is in mathematical analysis, and he has a special interest in the integration of technology and mathematics education. He has written technology materials for leading calculus and linear algebra textbooks including the Instructor's Mathematica Manual for Linear Algebra and Its Applications by David C. Lay and the Mathematica Technology Resource Manual for Thomas' Calculus. He is a member of the MAA and the recipient of the 2010 Academic Challenge Teaching Award at Whitworth University.
Charles B. "Chuck" Corbin is Professor Emeritus (Exercise and Wellness) at Arizona State University. He has authored or co-authored 200+ journal articles and more than 90 books including Texty Award winners Fitness for Life (5th ed.), Fitness for Life: Middle School, and Fitness for Life: Elementary School. His Concepts of Physical Fitness (16th ed.) earned the McGuffey Award. Dr. Corbin is internationally recognized as an expert in physical activity, youth fitness, and health and wellness. He has presented keynote addresses in 40+ states, major addresses in 15+ countries, and numerous named lectures. Among his many awards are American Fitness Leaders Award (President’s Council), Alliance Scholar Award (AAHPERD), and distinguished alumnus awards from the Universities of New Mexico and Illinois. He served 20+ years on the national fitness test advisory board (Fitnessgram) and was the first chair of the Science Board of the President’s Council. He is a member of the NASPE Hall of Fame. Carolyn Craven has been a teacher for over 20 years and is currently the Literacy Consultant for Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board. She holds a Bachelor Degree in Biology and History from the University of Western Ontario and a Bachelor of Education from Queens University.
Sean Donaghey teaches English with the Peel District School Board and is an award-winning author of graphic novels and textbooks. Having been published in The Globe and Mail and the National Post, he has also consulted with EQAO and e-Learning Ontario. Sean has presented at OISE UT, York University Faculty of Education and with the Toronto District School Board.
Glen Downey is a teacher, and academic, and author of more than eighty books. He has worked as an educator at a number of secondary and postsecondary institutions, including Appleby College, the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education, the University of British Columbia, and the University of Victoria. Glen received his Ph.D. in English from the University of Victoria (1998), and earned his B.A. (1991) and M.A. (1992) from McMaster University. He was awarded the University of British Columbia’s Ian Fairclough Prize for Teaching in 2000, and was the University of Western Ontario’s top education graduate in 2001. Glen has written scholarly articles for a range of print and online forums, and appears in the PBS Telecourse, English Composition: Writing for an Audience.
Janine D'Ippolito is a curriculum leader and innovator with 20 years experience with the TDSB. Her commitment to literacy, critical thinking and student success is evident in every aspect of her work. In addition to successfully motivating students of all ages and abilities, she co-authored Mass Media and Popular Culture version 1, developed selections and items for the EQAO Provincial Literacy Test and authored several BOLDPRINT Kids Graphic Readers.
Berrin Erdogan, PhD. is an Associate Professor of Management and the Express Employment Professionals Endowed Professor at Portland State University. She teaches organizational behavior and human resources management. Her research interests include individual attachment to organizations through fairness, leader-subordinate relations, and organizational culture. Her work has been published in the Academy of Management Journal, Journal of Applied Psychology, and Personnel Psychology. Dr. Erdogan has worked as a corporate trainer and conducted managerial seminars on motivation, organizational justice, performance appraisals and training and development. She serves on the editorial boards of the Journal of Applied Psychology, Journal of Management, Journal of Organizational Behavior and Personnel Psychology.
Bernard Gillett is a Senior Instructor at the University of Colorado at Boulder. His focus on campus is undergraduate education, and he has earned five teaching awards over the span of a 20-year career. He has been active in the publishing industry since 1993, working at that time as a developmental editor for a software package that accompanied a college mathematics textbook series. Bernard has published a number of books in the intervening years, including several student and instructor manuals for math texts, and four rock climbing guides for the mountains in and around Rocky Mountain National Park—climbing has been part of his life for 30 years. Calculus and Calculus: Early Transcendentals are his first textbooks.
Joan Green is a distinguished educator, senior policy advisor, and influential leader in the public sector. She was the first female Director of Education of the Board of Education for the City of Toronto and, prior to that, served as a teacher, principal, and superintendent. Joan is the founding CEO of the Ontario Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO) and is a co-author and senior member of the editorial board of several award-winning language and literacy series. Currently, Joan advises governments and school boards on quality assurance, governance, and curriculum.
Meg Greiner, MEd, is a National Board Certified elementary physical education teacher at Independence and Ash Creek Elementary Schools in Independence Oregon. She has been teaching elementary physical education for 21 years and regularly receives student teachers and practicum students into her setting. Meg has received numerous national awards and accolades for her innovative physical education program and the development of TEAM Time including the 2005 NASPE National Elementary Physical Education Teacher of the Year, 2005 USA Today All Star Teacher Team, and the 2006 Disney Outstanding Specialist Teacher of the Year. Meg is currently working with NASPE as a Head Start Body Start trainer of trainers, serving on the AAHPERD Physical Best Committee, and presenting NASPE Pipeline Workshops all over the United States. She has served on the NASPE Council of Physical Education for Children and on the Public Relations committee. She has served as the Physical Education President for both Oregon and Northwest District AHPERDs, has served Oregon AHPERD in many capacities, and has been honored with the OAHPERD Honor Award.
David C. Guevremont received his B.A. In Psychology from Providence College and his Ph.D. In clinical child psychology from West Virginia University. He completed a clinical psychology internship through Brown University. Dr. Guevremont was Associate Professor of Child Psychiatry at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center and has directed an ADHD and Disruptive Behavior Disorder Clinic at Plaza Psychology and Psychiatry for 24 years. He also is the clinical psychologist for the Woonsocket Education Department in RI. Dr. Guevremont specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. He has published 4 books and over 50 scientific and popular articles on the assessment and treatment of child and adolescent psychological disorders. His therapy specialization includes applied behavior analysis and child behavior therapy.
Barbara Gylys, MEd, CMA, is Professor Emerita at the College of Health and Human Service, University of Toledo, Toledo Ohio. During her tenure at the University of Toledo, Prof. Gylys successfully developed certificate programs in Electrocardiography Technology, Respiratory Therapy Technology, and Medical Secretarial Technology. She also implemented the two-year associate degree program in Medical Assisting. Her first book, Medical Terminology A Systems Approach was published June 1983 and quickly became one of the most popular medical terminology textbook in the market. She is also the author of Medical Terminology Simplified A Programmed Learning Approach by Body Systems, 4/e; Computer Applications for the Medical Office, and Introducing Medical Terminology Specialties, with Regina Masters, RN. Her most recent textbook, Medical Terminology Express, also coauthored with Regina Masters was published in September 2011. She has also written 14 Instructor’s Manuals, designed several competency-based medical terminology software programs, several power point programs, and other ancillary products to compliment the medical terminology textbooks. She was also an editor for four editions of the famous Taber’s Medical Dictionary. Lastly, Barbara served as a team member of the Joint Commission of Accrediting Medical Assisting Programs and was the representative of AAMA.
Kara Hume is an Investigator at the FPG Child Development Institute at UNC-Chapel Hill where she is conducting research on the efficacy of comprehensive treatment models for young children with autism spectrum disorders. She has worked with children and young adults on the autism spectrum for 17 years in a variety of capacities, primarily as a classroom teacher. Hume completed her doctorate at Indiana University in 2007, where she worked at the Indiana Resource Center for Autism and served as an Adjunct Professor in the School of Education. She is committed to supporting teachers of students with ASD in better understanding and implementing evidence based practices, as well as helping individuals with ASD function as independently as possible across settings. She has presented her work in these areas nationally and internationally, and has published her work in a number of book chapters and journals, including Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders, Research in Autism Spectrum Disorders, and Education and Training in Autism and Developmental Disabilities.
Dolly Lambdin, EdD, is a clinical professor in the Department of Kinesiology & Health Education at the University of Texas at Austin. She taught for 16 year in schools and 34 years in teacher preparation for many years teaching mornings in public schools and afternoons at the university. She has supervised over 100 student teachers and learned from scores of fabulous “cooperating teachers”. She has served as President of NASPE and on writing teams for the Texas Physical Education Essential Knowledge and Skills, the National and Texas State Physical Education Beginning Teacher Standards, and NASPE’s Appropriate Practices Guidelines. Dr. Lambdin has co-authored Putting Research to Work in Elementary Physical Education and Texty award winning Fitness for Life: Middle School, and Fitness for Life: Elementary School. Honors include the Massey Award for Excellence in Teacher Education, NASPE Physical Education Teacher Education Honor Award, and the TAHPERD College Teacher of the Year.
Ron Larson is a professor of mathematics at Penn State University in Erie, where he has taught since receiving his Ph.D. in mathematics from the University of Colorado in1970. Dr. Larson is well known as the lead author of comprehensive programs for mathematics that span middle school, high school, and college courses. His textbooks are published by Big Ideas Learning, Holt McDougal, Cengage Learning, and Pearson. Dr. Larson's numerous professional activities keep him in constant touch with the needs of students, teachers, professors, and supervisors.
Guy Le Masurier, Ph.D. is a Professor of Sport, Health and Physical Education at Vancouver Island University where he teaches physical education pedagogy, research methods, nutrition for health and sport, and several activity-based courses. Guy received his doctoral degree in Exercise & Wellness from Arizona State University and worked as an assistant professor of Kinesiology at Penn State University before returning to Vancouver Island where he grew up. His research focuses on physical activity measurement and promotion among children and adolescents. In addition to teaching and supervising student teachers in elementary and middle school physical education, Guy has conducted and published numerous studies on youth physical activity. He is passionate about physical education pedagogy, and how it can be used to promote physical activity among children and adolescents. Dr. Le Masurier is a co-author of the award-winning Fitness for Life: Middle School (2007) and the recently released Fitness for Life: Elementary School (2010) curricula. This year Guy was inducted as a Fellow to AAHPERD's Research Consortium. Guy enjoys kayaking, drumming, and most sports. Guy and his wife, Jodi, serve their community as volunteer firefighters.
Lori Lisi is the Coordinator of Secondary Programs at the York Catholic District School. She has worked in education for the last 24 years in various capacities. She has been an elementary teacher, a secondary English teacher, the dean of the School Library and Information Centre, and a literacy program resource teacher. Presently, she coordinates all secondary programs for her board. She has been a literacy consultant and reviewer in the publishing world. Lori graduated from York University and holds a degree in both Modern Languages and English Literature. She is, now, working on our Masters Degree in Literacy Education. Wendy Melnick has been an educator inspired by innovation since 2000. Her classroom is an example of 21st century fluencies at work: a fully equipped Apple computer lab with digital cameras and microphones. Students practice digital citizenship collaborating with wikis, producing socially relevant documentaries and sharing their ideas, projects and proposals with the global community. She utilizes the Internet to reach and engage her students and challenges them to make a difference in their worlds.
Heather Miller, also known as the Crayola Lady, is a former Arts Coordinator with the York Region District School Board. An artist, author and graphic designer, she has taught all grades K-12 and been an administrator in both elementary and secondary schools. Heather works with school districts across Canada and is known for her inspiring and practical approaches to engaging students in meaningful inquiry through the arts. Her lengthy experience working with students of all ages informs her practice and reinforces her belief in the power of the arts to transform learning. A popular presenter at conferences across Canada, Heather currently teaches in the Faculty of Education, York University, is the Coordinator of the Artist in Residence program for the York Region District School Board and is a member of the Crayola, Canada Education team.
Brooke Moore teaches English and Writing in West Vancouver, British Columbia. After her second year of teaching, Brooke stopped giving marks and started giving feedback; since then she has shared her classroom strategies with her colleagues within Canada and to international audiences at the 2008 International Congress of School Effectiveness and Improvement; in Beijing (2010) and Shanghai (2009), China; and to a delegation from Wales in 2011. Since earning her Masters of Leadership from the University of British Columbia in 2010, Brooke has been working with teachers in examining how teaching practice can move student learning forward through assessment as learning.
Patrice Morin-Spatz, originally from Lake Charles, Louisiana, never intended to become a writer. After all, English class was not a strong suit. Her plans included medical school. Following a receipt of a BA in chemistry and art with a minor in psychology at the college of St. Elizabeth’s in Morristown, New Jersey, she completed some postgraduate work at the Universidad de Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, Mexico and went on to be an editor of the CPT book (AMA publication). She started MedBooks, Inc. in 1986 and has taught over 35,000 people how to code as far away as Korea. She has provided expert witnessing for the FBI, US attorney's office, and various lawyers throughout the country on fraud and abuse and has authored 10 books on medical coding and billing. In her spare time, Patrice enjoys times with her family and pets and loves antiques. She also enjoys fishing and sewing.
Lesley Mandel Morrow Ph.D., is a Distinguished Professor of Literacy at Rutgers University’s Graduate School of Education. She Chairs the Department of Learning and Teaching. Her career began as a classroom teacher, she became a reading specialist and received her Ph.D. from Fordham University. Her research deals with strategies for enhancing early literacy development in at risk communities. Dr. Morrow has over 300 publications appearing as journal articles, book chapters, and books. She received awards for Excellence in Research, Teaching and Service from Rutgers. She received the International Reading Association’s (IRA) Outstanding Teacher Educator of Reading Award, and Fordham University’s Alumni Award for Outstanding Achievement. Dr. Morrow has received grants for research from the federal government and served as a researcher for Literacy Centers. She is a member of the Reading Hall of Fame and served as their President. She was President of IRA. She received IRA’s and the Literacy Research Association’s most prestigious awards for lifetime scholarship and service to literacy that has made a profound contribution.
Ravi Panwar has taught English and Media Studies at the secondary school level in the Peel District School Board for the past 11 years. In 1998, he graduated from Queen’s University at Kingston. Outside of the classroom Ravi Panwar has enjoyed an active artistic career as a songwriter, music composer, film festival director and filmmaker for the television and film industry in Canada, United States and the United Kingdom. He is currently the Curriculum Head of English at North Park Secondary School in Brampton, Ontario. Carol Ricker-Wilson, a resident of Toronto, has been a secondary school teacher, course director in the Faculty of Education at York University, and an English/Literacy consultant. She earned a PhD in Women's Studies and has published extensively in a variety of educational and commercial venues.
Eric Schulz has been on the mathematics faculty at Walla Walla Community College in Walla Walla, Washington since 1989. He has a BS in Mathematics from Seattle Pacific University (1985) and an MS in Mathematics/Optimization from the University of Washington (1988). He has been working with technology throughout his teaching career and is especially interested on innovative uses of technology in mathematics education. He has received an NISOD Teaching Excellence Award, created the Quick Start Assistant palettes shipping in Mathematica from Wolfram Research, Inc., and still considers it a privilege to spend time with students learning mathematics.
Michael Spiegler is a Professor of Psychology at Providence College. He has been a successful textbook and academic author for 40 years with several leading psychology textbooks, including Contemporary Behavior Therapy (5th ed.) and Personality: Strategies and Issues (8th ed.). He has presented numerous workshops on textbook writing at universities, professional conventions, and at the annual TAA conference. Michael regularly reviews manuscripts for textbook publishers and serves as a consultant/mentor to college textbook authors in diverse disciplines. He is currently writing a comprehensive Handbook for College Textbook Writing. He has taught a Chautauqua 3-day intensive course on textbook writing.
William Stallings is a prolific textbook author in the fields of computer security, computer networking, and computer architecture. He has authored 17 titles, and, counting revised editions, a total of 42 books on various aspects of these subjects. He has received the Texty Award in Computer Science eleven times. In over 30 years in the field, he has been a technical contributor, technical manager, and an executive with several high-technology firms. As a consultant, he has advised government agencies, computer and software vendors, and major users on the design, selection, and use of networking software and products. He created and maintains the Computer Science Student Resource Site at ComputerScienceStudent.com. This site provides documents and links on a variety of subjects of general interest to computer science students (and professionals). He is a member of the editorial board of Cryptologia, a scholarly journal devoted to all aspects of cryptology. Dr. Stallings holds a PhD from M.I.T. in Computer Science.
Mary Ellen Wedding received a Bachelor of Science degree from Siena Heights University, Adrian, Michigan. She completed training as a medical technologist at Providence Hospital, Detroit, Michigan and received her certification as a Registered Medical Technologist from the American Society of Clinical Pathologists. She served as a medical technologist at Providence Hospital and later as a biologist in virus vaccine development, and sterility testing at Parke Davis Pharmaceutical Company, Parkedale, Michigan. Professor Wedding earned a Master’s Degree in Health Education from the University of Toledo. During her 34-year-tenure at the University she received the Certified Medical Assistant designation from the American Association of Medical Assistants, and the Certified Professional Coder from the American Academy of Professional Coders. She is currently a Professor of Health Education in the Judith Herb College of Education, Health Science and Human Services, University of Toledo, Toledo, Ohio.
