On Winning a 2009 Texty or McGuffey Award:

Andreas Stark

Thoughts on the award from Andreas Stark, author of Seismic Methods and Applications, 1st. ed (Texty winner):

"I feel really blessed that my textbook has been chosen for this 2009 TAA Textbook Excellence Award. It always is an honor to be acknowledged and recognized by one's peers. This work took many years to come to fruition. It first started out as course notes over fifteen years ago and slowly was refined to several printed course materials before it was put into the form of a complete book. It would not have been possible without the support of my wife Regina and my thesis advisor Professor Donald Mitchell, both of whom encouraged me to write this book. Also I would like to thank my publisher Jeff Young at BrownWalker-Universal Publishers Inc. who made it all possible.

Over the years I have always found that there was not a single text available that would treat the materials in a simple logical and systematic manner so that even a novice could get a solid understanding of the seismic method. My purpose was to write for those who had an interest in the seismic method and the science of geophysics but were afraid because it is usually treated in an advanced manner. I hope that by writing and publishing this work we can bridge that gap and draw interest from many new students to the physical sciences."

BrownWalker Press, publisher of Seismic Methods and Applications, 1st. ed:

"BrownWalker Press is delighted that the Text and Academic Authors Association has honored one of our own. As a small publisher of academic texts, we enjoy working closely every year with a handful of carefully-selected authors. We chose Seismic Methods & Applications for publication because Andreas Stark is a leader in his field. His text is the fruition of a long and distinguished career as a teacher and practitioner and is a significant contribution to the field of geophysics. We are thrilled that TAA took notice. Thank you!"

William Stallings

Thoughts on the award from William Stallings, author of Operating Systems: Internals and Design Principles, 6th ed. (Texty winner):

"This book owes much to the generous amount of feedback on previous editions I have received over the years from both instructors and students. Each successive edition more closely matches what it is that both instructors and teachers want from an Operating System book. The award, for which I am very grateful, I believe reflects my success in responding to the feedback I have received."

Tracy Dunkelberger, Executive Editor, Prentice Hall Computer Science, Pearson Education, publisher of Operating Systems: Internals and Design Princples, 6th ed.:

“William Stallings, one of Pearson Education’s outstanding authors, has once again exceeded all expectations of quality, depth, and breadth of coverage with the publication of Operating Systems: Internals and Design Principles, 6e.  With every revision, Bill delivers relevant and innovative coverage of operating systems concepts that help students succeed. In the 6th edition, Bill introduced web based animations to aid visual learners and reinforce key OS concepts.  It is an honor to be Bill’s publisher and we look forward to new revisions and new releases from Bill in the coming years.”

Barbara Kaiser

Judy Sklar Rasminsky

Thoughts on the award from Judy Rasminsky & Barbara Kaiser, authors of Challenging Behavior in Elementary and Middle School, 1st. ed. (Texty winner):

"We started out thinking that Challenging Behavior in Elementary and Middle School would be relatively easy to write. We couldn’t have been more wrong. It turned out to be a difficult project in many ways, not the least of which was that we kept losing our editor. For several months we had no one to go to with our questions and problems, and as each new editor took over we discovered that we had lost photos, permission letters, and schedules along with the budding relationship. This instability led us to think of our book as an orphan no one wanted. Fortunately, we are extremely pleased with our third editor, and when we heard the wonderful news that our book had won the Texty, we knew it had come home safe at last. Thank you to TAA and our peers for your vote of confidence!"

Paul Smith, Vice President/Editor in Chief, Pearson Education, publisher of Challenging Behavior in Elementary and Middle School, 1st. ed:

“Pearson is pleased to receive this award from the Text and Academic Authors Association, and we appreciate the organization’s recognition of this valuable contribution made by our authors, Barbara Kaiser and Judy Rasminsky.

Jerry Wilson

Charles Higgins

Thoughts on the award from Jerry D. Wilson, An Introduction to Physical Science, 12th ed. (McGuffey winner):

"I want to thank TAA and the judges for the 2009 William Holmes McGuffey Longevity Award. I like the term 'longevity' for the textbook and me personally. The award is an honor, but not all of this goes to me. Much goes to my co-authors, reviewers, editors, proof-readers, and so on, in the production of the various editions. Personally, I like to think that with 12 editions of the textbook, hundreds of students have learned some physical science.

As a side note, William Holmes McGuffey, of McGuffey Reader and Longevity Award fame, was a professor and 4th president of my alma mater, Ohio University. I don't recall how I got it, but I once had one of his old readers and donated it to the university. And no, I was not in any of his classes."

Thoughts on the award from Charles Higgins, An Introduction to Physical Science, 12th ed.:

"I am very pleased and honored to be included for this award. This textbook has been published since 1971, and I’ve only been a part of it for the last 2 years. Because this is the William Holmes McGuffey Longevity Award, the accolades surely belong to James Shipman and Jerry Wilson, as they are the founding authors."

Thoughts on the award from Mary Finch, Publisher, Physical Sciences & Nicole Mollica, Marketing Manager, Brooks/Cole, Cengage Learning, publisher of An Introduction to Physical Science, 12th ed.:

"We at Cengage Brooks/Cole are thrilled to see this special honor bestowed to Jerry Wilson for An Introduction to Physical Science. We applaud Jerry’s commitment to the Sciences and value his lifetime work for students and faculty in this important discipline."

C. Donald Ahrens

Thoughts on the award from from C. Donald Ahrens, Meteorology Today, 9th ed. (McGuffey winner):

"I am extremely honored to receive this McGuffy award from the Text and Academic Authors Association.  I place so much of myself into each edition that it is a great feeling to be recognized for my efforts. Thank you so much."

Thoughts on the award from Yolanda Cossio, Publisher, Nicole Mollica, Marketing Manager, Life Sciences, Brooks Cole, Cengage Learning:

"On behalf of Cengage Learning/Brooks Cole we are honored to receive the McGuffey Award for Don Ahren’s Meteorology Today, 9e textbook. Don’s passion for science and enthusiasm for educating students has led to the long standing success of the franchise. We are privileged to have the pleasure of working with him on communicating accurate, current and pedagogically innovative information to students."

Karen Morris

Thoughts on the award from Karen Morris, author of Hotel, Restaurant and Travel Law: A Preventive Approach, 7th ed. (McGuffey winner):

"In 2007 the book celebrated the beginning of its fourth decade!   I am thrilled that the book has taught generations of hospitality students how to enhance the safety of their facilities, and minimize the costs and angst of litigation. I am very honored to receive the McGuffey award from my fellow TAA textbook authors."

Thoughts on the award from Anne Orgren, Product Manager, Career & Professional Editorial, Delmar, Cengage Learning:

"We’re honored to have received this award and are pleased to accept it on behalf of lead author Karen Morris and the families of her two co-authors, Norman G. Cournoyer and Anthony G. Marshall. We are all proud of the appreciation that instructors have shown this text for the past three decades, making it a best seller for the Delmar hospitality list. The longevity continues, as planning for the eighth edition is under way."

Jay Devore

Thoughts on the award from Jay Devore, author of Probability and Statistics for Engineering and the Sciences, 7th ed. (McGuffey winner):

"I have been a TAA member since the birth of the organization, and greatly appreciate its efforts over the years on behalf of authors. It is an honor to be singled out by them for this award."

Molly Taylor, Acquisitions Editor, Brooks/Cole, Cengage Learning, publisher of Probability and Statistics for Engineering and the Sciences, 7th ed.:

"Cengage Learning extends its gratitude to the TAA for recognizing Jay Devore's exemplary contributions to statistics education with a 2009 McGuffey Longevity Award. Through seven editions the market-leading Probability and Statistics for Engineering and the Sciences has established itself as the definitive introduction to statistics for students in engineering and the physical sciences, and as one of Cengage's most successful-selling titles in the mathematical sciences. An entire generation of engineering and scientific professionals were awakened to the practical relevancy of the subject by learning from Jay's text in their undergraduate engineering statistics courses. As an author he shows unparalleled intuition for cultivating students' interest in applying statistics to their own career aims, we congratulate Jay on this well-deserved honor."
