Andreas Stark

2009 Texty winner:

Seismic Methods and Applications: A Guide for the Detection of Geologic Structures, Earthquake Zones and Hazards, Resource Exploration, and Geotechnical Engineering, 1st ed., by Andreas Stark, published by Universal-Publishers, Inc. (College Physical Sciences category)

Andreas Stark:
"I have been teaching various courses at different levels in seismic applications and exploration methods for the oil and gas industry for many years. During all this time I did not find any text that would treat the material in such a way that a beginning professional or technologist could get a solid foundation in the seismic principles as applied in our industry. I therefore started developing notes to supplement my advanced industry courses and seminars so that a broader audience could gain an understanding of the procedures. This grew into the basis for this text. Also, I found that most texts did not properly build foundations for understanding the subject matter and I decided to not take anything for granted and assumed known. This is why I developed the various sections to slowly build up the knowledge level before treating the subject matter itself.

The book can also serve as a reference for practicing professionals and has an ample amount of mentioned references at the various levels of difficulty."

Thoughts on the award from Andreas Stark, author of Seismic Methods and Applications, 1st. ed:

"I feel really blessed that my textbook has been chosen for this 2009 TAA Textbook Excellence Award. It always is an honor to be acknowledged and recognized by one's peers. This work took many years to come to fruition. It first started out as course notes over fifteen years ago and slowly was refined to several printed course materials before it was put into the form of a complete book. It would not have been possible without the support of my wife Regina and my thesis advisor Professor Donald Mitchell, both of whom encouraged me to write this book. Also I would like to thank my publisher Jeff Young at BrownWalker-Universal Publishers Inc. who made it all possible.

Over the years I have always found that there was not a single text available that would treat the materials in a simple logical and systematic manner so that even a novice could get a solid understanding of the seismic method. My purpose was to write for those who had an interest in the seismic method and the science of geophysics but were afraid because it is usually treated in an advanced manner. I hope that by writing and publishing this work we can bridge that gap and draw interest from many new students to the physical sciences."

BrownWalker Press, publisher of Seismic Methods and Applications, 1st. ed:

"BrownWalker Press is delighted that the Text and Academic Authors Association has honored one of our own. As a small publisher of academic texts, we enjoy working closely every year with a handful of carefully-selected authors. We chose Seismic Methods & Applications for publication because Andreas Stark is a leader in his field. His text is the fruition of a long and distinguished career as a teacher and practitioner and is a significant contribution to the field of geophysics. We are thrilled that TAA took notice. Thank you!"

Advice from Andreas Stark, author of Seismic Methods and Applications, 1st. ed:

"The advice I can give to new authors is that in order to write a text on any subject, one needs to have a solid understanding of the subject matter as well as the audience for which it will be written. Make sure you try out the materials and listen to the feedback from your students so that you understand where their difficulties are in understanding the subject matter. Build from basic examples to the more advanced knowledge levels and give some examples on how to apply the material. Never assume that certain principles have been taught somewhere else as it quite often has not been taught or has been forgotten.

It should also be noted that developing a text takes many years of preparation as well as many hours of typing, editing and re-editing. The results can be quite satisfying however, as is the case here. Not only because of winning the award, but also because the reception by my students has been very good and they find the text very informative."
