< Back to Podcasts/Recordings Authoring into Retirement: Too Much Invested to Quit?
Presented by J. David Hunger, Emeritus Professor of Management at Iowa State University, Strategic Management Scholar in Residence at Saint John's University (MN), and co-author of Strategic Management and Business Policy (12th ed.), Concepts in Strategic Management and Business Policy (12th ed.), and Essentials of Strategic Management (5th ed.) How do you retire from textbook publishing? J. David Hunger will lead a discussion on how to determine a good time for a textbook author to call it quits. Is it when the publisher points to falling to sales, when the royalties are no longer worth the effort, or when the “fun” of authorship fades? Assuming the book(s) is still selling well, does it make sense to continue writing textbooks once one has retired from a teaching position? How does a textbook author “cut back” from the work involved in generating new editions? Should one continue revising textbooks while in retirement, because the author has “too much invested to quit?” What is the best way to find someone else to take over the book? Should this decision be left to the publisher? Is a gradual transfer in authorship and royalties the best approach or should the transfer be more abrupt?
J. David Hunger received his Ph.D. in Organizational Behavioral from Ohio State University in 1973. He taught nine years at the University of Virginia, one year at George Mason University, and 23 years at Iowa State University in its College of Business. Previously, he served to the rank of Captain in U.S. Army Military Intelligence (Vietnam) and worked at Lazarus Department Store (selling supervisor) and Procter & Gamble (brand management). He retired in 2006 from Iowa State as Emeritus Professor of Management and is currently teaching part-time at Saint John’s University as Strategic Management Scholar in Residence. He co-authors with Thomas L. Wheelen the textbooks, Strategic Management and Business Policy (12th ed.), Concepts in Strategic Management and Business Policy (12th ed.), and Essentials of Strategic Management (5th ed.)
