Presenting Publishable Papers

Attendees will share tips on turning conference presentations into publishable articles. The good news is that much of the groundwork has been done — frequently an abstract already exists. Powerpoint slides can provide an outline and the literature search may already be completed. Knowing publisher's guidelines for targeted journals is important to read ahead of time as an organizing tool. Adhering to length and format requirements can prevent problems down the road. Proofreading for spelling, grammatical and other stylistic issues can be critical to getting past the article review stage. Camera-ready clean copy makes a big difference. Allowing sufficient time and setting weekly milestones can help alleviate a hurried finished product. Organizing drafts by date and keeping back-ups of files makes subsequent editorial changes easier to tackle.

About the Moderator: 

Mary Jo Orzech, PhD. is Interim Director of Drake Memorial Library and Director of Information Technology Support Services at SUNY Brockport. Orzech has reviewed presentations for the SUNY Conference on Instructional Technology (CIT) and articles for the Special CIT Issue of the Journal of Educational Technology Systems (JETS). She also served as a 2006 reviewer for the Consortium for Computing Sciences in Colleges - Northwest Region conference. Her writing interests include technology, education, higher education planning and assessment.
