List of Mentors: Janet Belsky (Ph.D. Clinical Psychology, The University of Chicago) has been writing textbooks in developmental psychology for the past 25 years. For most of her writing career, Dr. Belsky's focus was adulthood and aging. She is the author of The Psychology of Aging: theory, research, and interventions (Wadsworth, l999), now in its third edition and The Adult Experience (Wadsworth, 1997). Along the way she also wrote a successful trade book, Here Tomorrow: making the most of life after 50 (Johns Hopkins, Press, l988; Ballantine, l990). Her capstone textbook covering the whole lifespan, Experiencing the lifespan (Worth Publishers, l997) was just published about six months ago. And now Dr. Belsky is immersed in writing yet another textbook this time in child development. In addition to her textbook writing passion, Dr. Belsky's other life passion is teaching undergraduateswhich she is happily doing, most recently as a Full Professor in the Psychology Department at Middle Tennessee State University. Willing to mentor on: Anything relating to the actual nuts and bolts of writing a textbook--from preparing the proposal to getting along with editors--to structuring your time, to responding to reviewer critiques, etc. Robert Christopherson, author of Geosystems, 6/e, Elemental Geosystems, 5/e, and other titles, science texts for colleges and universities, including CDs and website. Willing to mentor on: geography, science, using systems theory for organization, integrating relevant topics, embedding URLs in the text, organizing the writing activity and writing studio, preparing a proposal, getting started, teaching from your own book, participating in marketing, how to revise. Tara Gray serves as associate professor of criminal justice and as the first director of the Teaching Academy at New Mexico State University (NMSU). Tara has published three books, including her most recent, Publish and Flourish: Become a Prolific Scholar. She has presented workshops on publishing fluently to 3,000 participants in more than twenty of the United States, and in Canada, Mexico, Guatemala, and Thailand. Willing to mentor on: how to get and sustain momentum as a writer. Jan L. Kardys has over 20 years' diversified publishing experience for eight major publishing corporations. She was the Director of Contracts at Warner Books/Little Brown and Co., Director of Contracts at Macmillan Publishing Co. and Contracts Director at Prentice Hall/Simon and Schuster. Ms. Kardys has also worked at Harcourt Brace Javanovich, Doubleday, Scholastic, Lippincott & Crowell, Publishers and St. Martin's Press in editorial, subsidiary rights and production. Willing to mentor on: Finding a literary agent; Subsidiary Rights; Contracts; Permissions. Dr. Jan Lyons is an adjunct professor in Risk Management at Southern Methodist University in Dallas and author of Risk Management for Technical Professionals. She holds degrees in Economics and Systems Engineering from William and Mary College, Clemson University, and the University of Alabama in Huntsville. Prior to joining SMU, Dr. Lyons worked in varying capacities in Operations Research and Systems Engineering with Lockheed Martin, Martin Marietta Energy Systems and General Dynamics. She led efforts in risk oversight, business systems implementation, software program management, and mathematical modeling research and development. Willing to mentor on: self-publishing; authoring your first textbook Bill Timberlake taught chemistry at Los Angeles Harbor College for 36 years and is now retired. He has been a part of the Timberlake book writing team for over 30 years and knows about writing and preparing texts for production. He has been the writer of the test banks for the Timberlake texts. Willing to mentor on: the preparation of test banks, and most anything related to the work done by authors to prepare manuscripts as well as editing the pages during production. Karen Timberlake taught chemistry at Los Angeles Valley College for 36 years. She has been writing introductory chemistry textbooks for more than 30 years. Her textbooks vary from 2nd editions to 9th editions and she is preparing for a 10th edition. Her material for textbooks is based on her teaching. A major feature of the Timberlake text is the use of pedagogical aids to meet different learning styles of students and different teaching styles of instructors. Willing to mentor on: Anything related to beginning a new edition and the steps involved from manuscript to final pages; the design of a text as well as preparing powerpoint slides with textual art. |
