General Session

Lawrence J. Mullen

Orientation to Las Vegas' Most Colorful Characters

Friday, June 20, 8:30 to 9 a.m.
Reno Room

Presenter: Lawrence J. Mullen, University of Nevada, Las Vegas

The author of Las Vegas: Media and Myth (Rowan and Littlefield, 2007) will share strategies for writing a "cross-over" book: an academic but highly readable book marketable to a much wider audience. Mullen will share the book's genesis as well as a candid assessment of how conducting the scores of interviews reprinted in the book (of media, political, and entertainment personalities) changed him and his understanding of Las Vegas, a place he calls home. He will also share whether he feels he succeeded with his cross-over book, and whether such an undertaking can hurt or help an academic's career.

About the Presenter:

Lawrence J. Mullen (Ph.D. University of Iowa, 1992) is Associate Professor in the Hank Greenspun School of Journalism and Media Studies. His areas of research interest and teaching include visual aesthetics and media and community. His recent book, Las Vegas: Media and Myth explores the impact the media have on the transient community of Las Vegas. His other published research has explored the phenomenon of visual communication in several setting including the nexus between community and visuality. His teaching focuses on visual studies, but has also explored media and reality in an experimental course on massively multi-player on-line games.
