Finding Images: Understanding Licensing and Using the Public Domain

Presenters: Christopher Harris, Middle Tennessee State University, and Barbara Waxer, co-author of Internet Surf and Turf: The Essential Guide to Copyright, Fair Use, and Finding Media

Christopher Harris, a professor of Media Studies at Middle Tennessee State University and a former professional photographer, will present information regarding how to search for, and obtain the rights to use photographs and other visual content for your books. Harris will guide you through the process of evaluating your specific needs in the visual arena, as well as pricing and negotiation techniques. Additionally, information regarding how to prepare and preserve your images for publication will be addressed.

Barbara Waxer, co-author of Internet Surf and Turf: The Essential Guide to Copyright, Fair Use, and Finding Media, will share how to find images you can use, and how to understand open access licensing and the public domain.

About the Presenters:

Christopher Harris is a Professor of Media Studies at Middle Tennessee State University. Harris was a freelance photojournalist for more than 25 years before returning to the university for his master's in journalism. He has taught at Middle Tennessee State University since 1991. Harris holds a medal from the National Press Photographers Association for editing and producing Protocol, a white paper report on newsroom ethics. He is the author of numerous academic articles published in The Journal of Mass Media Ethics, Visual Communication Quarterly, History of Photography, Medien Psychologie, Federal Communication Law Journal (UCLA) and Communication and the Law. Harris is also the author of Visual Journalism, published by Allyn & Bacon.

Barbara Waxer is a freelance author and developmental editor of computer software and Internet intellectual property textbooks for the academic and trades markets. Her clients include Cengage /Course Technology and Delmar Learning, Microsoft Press, Perspection Press, Pearson-Prentice Hall, and Sybex Press. Her 2006 text, Internet Surf and Turf: The Essential Guide to Copyright, Fair Use, and Finding Media, published by Cengage Course Technology, won the Text and Academic Authors Association "Texty" Award and the New England Book Show Award. Waxer also teaches Copyright and Digital Media at Santa Fe Community College and provides training in that topic to college faculty and student bodies around the country. Her current book, Adobe Photoshop Elements, will be published by Course Technology later this year.
