Discussion for Non-Tenured Professors & Those New to Higher
Education
Moderators:
Andrew Johnson, Professor of Holistic Education, Minnesota
State University, Mankato
and
Prof. Lynne Brodeur, University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, Dept.
of Medical Laboratory Science
Andrew
P. Johnson, is Professor of Holistic Education at Minnesota
State University, Mankato. He has taught courses in educational
psychology, literacy, and action research since 1996. In this
period he has written eight books and more than 40 articles, book
chapters, and monographs. He went through the promotion ranks
to full professor in six years. His experience also includes chairing
the Department of Special Education for four years and serving
on the personnel committees that make recommendations regarding
tenure and promotion. He will address issues related to carving
out time for writing, simple ways to document source service,
and tips for putting together tenure and promotion documents.
Lynne
A. Brodeur is a Full-time Visiting Lecturer at the University
of Massachusetts, Dartmouth, has a B.S. in Medical laboratory
Science, and an M.A. in Teaching. Her area of concentration is
Clinical/Bio Chemistry and Biotechnology. She is about to go through
the tenure process after having been a full time lecturer in her
department for 10 years. Brodeur will share her experience with
getting her dean and chairperson to approve a tenured position
at a state university with little funding, by setting herself
up to take advantage of the opportunity, e.g., taking on professional
activities, including poster and abstract presentations at national
conventions (ASCLS); and advising biotechnology students in her
department (even though as a full timer this is not part of her
contract). Brodeur also volunteers as an ASCLS (American Society
of Clinical Laboratory Scientists) Consumer Website response team
member (answering consumer lab test questions throughout the world):
