Founded in 2007 by textbook publishing industry veterans, privately held Flat World Knowledge is a leading publisher of free and open textbooks for higher education. Written by the expert authors, Flat World books are peer reviewed, professionally edited and developed, and made available for free online under a Creative Commons license to educators and students. Educators have the freedom to use the books as-is, or to reorganize and edit them to suit their unique classroom requirements. Students can access the books for free online, or purchase low-cost soft cover, audio, self-print and ereader versions, as well as a variety of study aids at a fraction of the cost of traditional textbooks. About the Presenters:

Clancy Marshall a 14-year publishing veteran, is the General Manager of DynamicBooks, a new generation of interactive online textbooks designed for students, instructors and authors. At DynamicBooks, a subsidiary of Macmillan, Marshall manages the day-to-day operations including sales, marketing, product development, partner recruitment, and author negotiations/relations. Prior to DynamicBooks, Marshall was instrumental with Macmillan’s W.H. Freeman group (higher education textbooks), first as acquisitions editor, and most, recently as publisher. Prior to Macmillan, Marshall managed marketing at John Wiley and Sons. She began her career in sales and worked for both Jones and Bartlett and Harcourt publishers. Marshall received her Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of Richmond.

Jeff Shelstad is co-founder and Chief Executive Officer of Flat World Knowledge, a venture capital-backed new venture publishing free and openly licensed college textbooks. Flat World Knowledge has raised over $11.5 million in private investment capital in the past two years, disrupting the $8 billion textbook market with its innovative business model that includes a forward-looking compensation model for authors. Jeff brings a 20-year successful record in higher education business publishing to the venture. He’s held positions of increasing responsibility in sales, marketing, editorial, and senior management. Jeff has personally acquired some of the most successful business textbook authors in print today. Most recently, Jeff served as Editorial Director at Prentice Hall Business Publishing, a division with annual sales in the hundreds of millions. He had full P&L responsibility for the division, and managed a team of over sixty Acquisitions Editors, Development Editors, Media Editors, and Project Managers. A proud native Minnesotan, Jeff graduated from University of Minnesota Carlson School of Business in 1987 and later received his Executive MBA from Duke University in 2004.
