Strategies for successful grant proposals

Moderator:
Dr. Claudia Sanchez, Associate Professor, Department of Teacher Education, Texas Woman’s University)

While grant writing and securing external funds is a hallmark of professional success in academe and much of the business world, professionals often encounter few formal opportunities to acquire grant writing skills in school.
Albeit some colleges and universities offer formal training in the form of grant writing courses, the extent to which most of these courses provide practical, ready-to-use information is often questioned.

This round table discussion will demystify the grant writing process and will focus on specific strategies novice grant writers can use for the development of strong federal grant proposals. The strategies discussed will apply to federal and non-federal grants for program development, as well as research grants. The presenter will (a) draw on her experience as a grant writer and reviewer, (b) share the most common errors in the design of proposals, and (c) provide a road map to successful grant applications via a checklist to encourage potential grant applicants’ self-assessment of their projects.

About the Moderator:

Claudia Sanchez is Associate Professor in the Department of Teacher Education at Texas Woman’s University. Her academic interests include grant writing, multicultural teacher competency, and English Second Language (ESL) teaching methods. She has written and directed three federal grants totaling over 4 million dollars, which focus on teacher preparation.
